How much learner engagement is required in remote training?

Remote training has become the crux of training these days.

This is since the COVID-19 pandemic spread across the world.
An elearning environment provides a detailed environment for learners. There are improvised scenarios in an elearning module which make sure that the learner understands the topic. Elearning can also involve gamification and boost the morale of a learner with the aid of a leaderboard. A leaderboard shows the scores of various other learners in a certain game.

Interactivity is important in elearning. The placement of interactions in an elearning course is important. They must be used to guide a learner through the course. The learner must be a part of interactions with as per the learning objectives. It’s often tough to ask which kinds of interactivities should be used because there is a large variety of them. There are assessment questions and videos also.

The participants can also be asked to select a certain area with a hotspot. When they have selected the right area, they are given the go-ahead. But when they don’t know the correct answer, they can be given a hint. It’s often a perplexing question before an instructional designer about how many interactions he should have in a course. The knowledge of “how many” only comes with the right experience.

The number of interactivities in a remote learning course depends on how much of learner participation do you want.

Hence there are no questions or practice sessions. Apart from that, the learner is expected to learn through graphics and photos. He can just read the content or listen to it.


It’s all about learning through some engagement. So, there are quizzes included in the interaction. Apart from that, there are simple scenarios. There are also images for better learner’s understanding.


This consists of higher learner participation. The learner is introduced to branching, and he has to choose between options. Since branching is there, a learner has to select scenarios requiring decision making. High level of assessment questions are introduced. They have hints when learners can’t get them right. Animations and graphics are required for better learner understanding.


This kind of an elearning module is used for the high involvement of learners. So, it involves virtual reality scenarios for the learner. For example, he might have to fly a flight in the VR simulation or even dispose of a bomb. There are animations and videos to teach the learner. Apart from that, there are multiple branching scenarios. So, a lot of involvement is needed from the learner’s side.

Such kind of VR based scenarios are required in complex remote training environments because the risk involved in real life in such scenarios is too high. That’s why the learners have high engagement in such situations. The exclusivity of the subject matter decides how much learning engagement is required. If the learning engagement required is high, the level of the module is complex. So, this is how remote training can be made more effective.
