colours affect humans

How can colors affect human psychology?

Colour is very important to make human beings learn better because different colours evoke varied emotions in them.

Colours produce psychological triggers. Every instructional designer should know how colours can help. Colours can influence anyone’s psyche and an instructional designer should be aware of them.

Colour impacts

When a person sees an object, the eye records the object’s colour. Then there is correspondence with the hypothalamus gland in the brain. This gland then sends signals to the thyroid and the pituitary glands. These glands then produce chemicals due to which a person’s behaviour is affected. Human beings decide to communicate with an object-based partially(60-90%) on its colour. Hence colours have been used to influence the buyers by the marketing teams.

The digital learning works based on colours. The colour associations can evoke a different response from human beings all the time. But apart from the working of glands, how human beings interpret colours is also dependent on how their upbringing has been. Their own experiences with colours also matter for their interpretation.

Associaton of colours with moods

  • Blue-The colour blue refers to peace and loyalty. Thats why it’s used so much by corporate organisations. Since blue suppresses hunger, it should not be used in an advertisement for food.
  • Yellow-Yellow signifies fun and joy. It’s hence employed by brands that want customers to feel happy when they use their products. So, organisations which want to sell happiness with their candies and toys use the colour yellow.
  • Green-Green is often directed at organisations that want the audience to be directed towards nature. It can also be used to catch the attention of the audience. Therefore, it is used for influencing buyers to make buying decisions. All the “buy” buttons in online advertisements are of green colour.
  • Black-Black is a colour you must have often seen in advertisements for luxury goods. This s because black indicates royalty, elegance and has a classy feeling to it. Black is therefore used to sell high-end luxury items.

So, you must have understood the purpose of colours in getting attention from the audience. Here are some colour combinations that you can use for designing your course.

Red-For example, you can use red if you feel that the course is getting too boring. It can decrease boredom.

Yellow-If you want learners to use more of their brains, you can use the colour yellow.

Colours in contrast-If you want learners to pay attention, then using contrasting colours is the best option.

So, this is how you can use colours to make your elearning design more interesting.
