What should an organization opt for, custom-made modules or off-the-shelf courses?
Elearning companies have to make an impact on the target audience with their work. There is a higher impact on the learners when the content is taught interestingly. Then, it has a better impact on users.
Therefore, custom-made content is quite useful and elearning companies come into the picture because courses have to be developed specifically for every client.
This can be explained with the help of a situation. Suppose A is a retail bank. It needs to prepare an elearning module for its employees for how to handle KYC(

) situations. Similarly, B is also a financial institution that needs content for the same purpose. Now, they approach one of the elearning companies P to create this content for them.
P provides them with 2 options, either, it should prepare a custom-made module for them or give them what it already has with it, an off-the-shelf course. An off-the-shelf course is not specific to the industry, it has prepared for previous clients or to be sold to a mass audience by the elearning company.
There are differences between the modules. In the case of the 1st module, which is custom made, A and B will get different modules. These modules will be replete with their industry-specific scenarios.
They can also get added other details to their modules as and when they consider necessary.
Although the KYC modules for these specific clients prepared by P will be different, there will be the same technical knowledge contained in them i.e. how to handle the KYC process. The module for bank A will have the KYC process details when customers come to it to get home and vehicle loans.
There are many reasons why a client should choose a custom-made course for their learners. These are the advantages of such a course:
Branding is easier
When you have custom-made modules, it becomes easier to brand yourself. It is because the colours of the characters are suited to the company’s logo colours and every slide in the video features the company logo.
Easier to use
Bespoke modules are designed as per a client’s needs. So, the user interface is also designed upon what the learners would find easy to use. Such kind of user interface can be designed when the elearning company has brainstormed with the client’s target audience. Thus, it knows how they are likely to use the module. The bespoke module is often tested with the target audience and any corrections are made if required.
Easier narration
Such modules have voice recorded for them by a preferred voice-over artist chosen by the target audience. So, such a bespoke elearning module does not have a voiceover in the form of machine voice with accents not understandable by the target audience.
Better storyboarding
Such bespoke modules have Instructional designers of the company prepare a special storyboard for them. The storyboard gets inputs from subject matter experts and specialists in the client’s company so, that makes sure that the video delivers a preferred experience.
Cost control
It is also an important feature of bespoke modules that they are designed as per the budget mentioned by the client. On the other hand, off-the-shelf courses have a fixed cost. The client can be just offered a discount on them.
This is how bespoke or custom-made modules hold an advantage over off-the-shelf courses.
