screencasts

How to use screencasts for the benefit of learners?

There is pressure on the creators of remote learning now. They don’t know how to attract the attention of the learners. Now, there is a new invention in this regard known as the flipped classroom. Now, what is exactly? In this method of teaching, the students follow the lower methods of Bloom’s taxonomy(knowledge, comprehension, and application)in the classroom and apply their energy to higher levels of this taxonomy(analysis, synthesis and evaluation) when they are outside the class. The students work on these levels through the homework given to them.
So, a student is given help by a teacher to complete the homework in the form of screencasting.

Screencasts are a form of screen sharing in which the educators share their PC screen with the students.

The students get important insights and can complete their homework. This method of knowledge sharing is not only used by teachers but also employers and trainers who need to train their employees about a new methodology. The best part about this process is that employees can share their screens about important software processes. The employees also get to listen to the voice of someone who is screencasting, thus enabling them to follow the shared screens. Another benefit of screencasting is that the software tools are readily available to capture such screens for e.g. Adobe Captivate. On the other hand, screencasted video can have the voices of the trainer or use the voices present in the tool.
Screencasting can be used in flipped classroom methods, where students learn everything on their own through a screencast emailed to them, and the teacher can ask them questions about the lower levels of Bloom’s taxonomy in a class.

Why should you use Screencasting?

  • Screencasting is quite useful because learners tend to retain what is shown to them. as per research done by Edgar Dale, learners only retain 10% of something read by them, but they tend to retain 50% of something they have read and seen.
  • The screencast gets recorded so a learner can watch it when they want, and rewind it too.
  • The class is finished quickly once everything is demonstrated to them through a screencast.
  • Screencasts can also be uploaded to Youtube so that students anywhere can have access to them. They also impart knowledge to newbies who don’t have any previous knowledge of the subject. Their biggest USP is that screencasts can be watched in an isolated space and you can also learn about complex software processes from it.
  • Screencasts can also have closed captions to explain the process to students in case the voice can’t be recorded. On the other hand, there can also be hotspots in them to make students learn where to click the mouse for a certain step in a software procedure. There can also be assessments build in these screencasts to test the knowledge of students.

So, this is how you can use screencasts and build better elearning courses with them.
