What are the problems in implementing elearning for students?

There has been a huge change in the worldwide educational scene due to the Covid-19. Educational institutions all over the world shifted to online learning and hence the focus turned to eLearning creation. The students had to suffer because of this change as lab classes were canceled. Also, it became mandatory to study from home. This change was pivotal for many institutions because they had to provide students with an eLearning LMS platform and create their credentials and monitor their performance.

Ivy League institutions also had to shift their education to an eLearning LMS platform where students could log in and attend classes and training materials etc.

Teachers don’t know how to teach online

This shift to online learning has been stressful for many teachers because it is unprecedented. Although the IT staff of educational institutions has been helping the instructors to operate the eLearning LMS platform, they are only able to help a few. It’s because online learning was implemented faster than anyone could imagine and it was unanticipated.

The faculty is also not comfortable teaching students online because of the inability to handle IT equipment. Also, the teachers have their learning curve for teaching through an eLearning LMS platform. When the teachers are teaching the same course the 2nd or 3rd time, they become efficient in delivering online classes. So, they require practice to become perfect and this time can range from a single day to weeks for different teachers.

Lack of resources

Although the IT staff is eager to help, the server of the schools doesn’t have the bandwidth to handle so many students logging in. The servers can crash down. Another problem is eLearning creation i.e. how to use the authoring tools to develop such content. If some teachers have digital fluency, only they can use such tools and they need the support of SMEs also. But all the teachers are not experts at using eLearning creation tools and have different levels of technical knowledge and require support.

Every subject can’t be taught online

Another problem is elearning creation which can be problematic because every subject now has to be taught online.

Some subjects can’t be taught online so properly. Also, instructors don’t know how to impart classes in such subjects i.e. the online content.

It’s difficult to implement online learning because many strategies are available. But the right strategy depends on the size of the class. Also, students can’t be given individualized feedback as the class size increases. There is also the question of how online learning is to be implemented because, unlike students, adults don’t have much time on their hands to take live classes.

So, for them, asynchronous learning is the best option, but students can only study in a routine.

Moreover, there is more to teaching than just face-to-face classes. Students in classroom-based learning also get to participate in extracurricular activities, which is not possible with an eLearning LMS platform. Students also can get books from libraries to enhance their knowledge about subjects, something which their teachers advise. Therefore, school-based teaching is a complete system, something which online learning lacks.

The universities will have to prepare themselves for providing more comprehensive eLearning. This requires advanced planning and then developing a course requiring a time gap of 6-9 months before it is launched.

What is the solution?

Emergency remote teaching(ERT) is the solution in which the students are imparted teaching through the blended teaching model. This teaching model involves online learning and classroom-based training, the latter involving webinars.

So, the portion of the syllabus that the students can’t learn on their own through training materials is delivered online through webinars. The main aim of this system is to cope with emergencies and is available during Covid-19.

This system does not require any planning to be implemented but can be set up quickly. Many countries have implemented this method of teaching during the Covid-19 crisis like Afghanisation. The female students were provided DVDs because they could not go to school.

When teachers are allowed to impart instruction through blended learning they can develop online teaching materials in their comfort. It’s because everything else can be taught through webinars. Although ERT does not have any planning and is developed rapidly, it is a correct solution during a crisis. But, it might not have the quality of eLearning creation which requires planning.

However, access for all students must be a necessity in ERT also and it must be based on universal design for learning(UDL). It must be focused on students and must make sure that they can get the learning material any time and understand it too.

In the end:

Any online learning approach will have to be implemented keeping different factors in mind, like how many students completed the course, how many could access it and the time invested by the faculty to develop it. This is how effective eLearning creation can be done.

How to make an elearning course find buyers through its content?

Elearning has been able to generate a huge demand for it. But there should be efforts in creating the right kind of course. Elearning content should be written effectively. But the competition in the elearning market is quite high and you can’t believe that you have written the best content always. The elearning content has to be sold and no matter how well it is written, there does not need to be a sales pitch in it.

These are the following ways in which you can make sure that buyers are keen to get your elearning content:

Don’t use lies to sell your course

First of all, it should not be using fake, sugar-coated language which can prove to be irritating for buyers. Everyone knows that an elearning course can influence them but can’t change their lives forever. So, refrain from making the use of words like “opportunity of a lifetime”. However, this kind of language can distract a learner from going through your course because he knows you are lying and are desperate to sell the course.

You should avoid praising your course

For example in the introduction to the course, you might be using language such as “incredible” which can’t interest a buyer. Although you might have created a course that is useful to the buyer, it’s not an out-of-the-world. You can use words like how the course will teach them feasible ways of doing something.

Exclamation points

You should not overuse these points. You can use them once or twice in the course. Apart from that, you should refrain from using Capital case in your course because it can annoy the learners.

Refrain from using jargon

You should also not use unnecessary jargon in the course because it can’t be understood by the newcomers in the domain. They can hence find the course difficult and leave it in between. But such words are appropriate if your target audience consists of professionals who are aware of such words.

Know your audience

It’s also important to select the target audience for the elearning content.

The course creators should know that their course won’t be read by everyone. But being selective about the target audience helps you because, in this way, you can create a course easily.

Therefore, the following factors have to be chosen while selecting the target audience for the elearning content:

Cost: The cost of the course is an important factor because some learners can’t buy it.

Ethnicity: The country to which the learners belong is also important apart from their age and sex because it determines the language to be used in the course.

It’s better to mention the features of your course and then the benefits. So features might be parts of the course, but they are not beneficial to the user. Hence, it’s better to talk about benefits before features of the course such as quizzes. The benefits of the course could be like how it can help users perform better in his/her job. This is how you can make sure that buyers want to get your course after reading a sample from it.

How to get the elearning content?

Elearning Content is the foundation for successful training.

Companies may want to shop for content, but there are many considerations involved. The first of them is that you need to search for various options before getting the right one. You can’t just get fixated on the first elearning content you see.

It is because you should not be regretting the decision about the purchase of the learning content including videos, text and assessments. This kind of mistake can land you in trouble when the employers and the other stakeholders are not able to understand it.

Decide about Elearning content topic

It is important to decide about the topic of the elearning. Businesses need elearning content for various reasons such as communication skills, customer service training, safety, health and fitness and compliance training. So, with the proper categories in mind, you can find content easily. There are so many inbuilt characters in elearning authoring tools. For example, in Vyond, you can change the expression and action of the character chosen by you. It’s important to use a proper elearning tool to prepare an entertaining video to get the attention of learners. Even if the topic is boring, an entertaining video can make sure learners learn something through the video.

Use of Modern-day authoring tools

The impact of the content is also a powerful consideration. It’s because if the voice is used in PowerPoint, it does have an impact but it’s outdated now. Now so many better authoring tools are available in which you can incorporate visual animation not possible in PowerPoint. You can enable the text-to-speech feature in PowerPoint which will read whatever you have written in slides. But, you can’t include a pause in it, unlike an authoring tool where commas can be introduced to indicate a pause. In PowerPoint, you have to enable the Speak button and then select the text and click on the button to generate text-to-speech.

You can get off-the-shelf learning content if your topic is quite common and you don’t need some special research into it. In that case, that content is apt. But most of the elearning companies don’t change the content regularly because of the expenses of hiring a subject matter expert. So, you should get the most updated off-the-shelf elearning content. Getting off-the-shelf content has one advantage that your internal teams are freed from the job of developing learning content. Elearning content vendors can also provide you with localization services, i.e. to translate the content into any language.

Microlearning

Microlearning videos are also a good idea. First of all, the companies know that the employee’s attention span is low. So when they watch such short videos, they can watch them with better concentration. You should ask a company for their microlearning videos and see whether any one of them is relevant for your purpose.

This is how you must get the elearning content for the most productive results.

LMS

Why is an LMS required in a company?

There has been a massive change in the structure of organizations now. The meetings are now happening telephonically and people are working from their homes. But for effective leadership, leaders must be connected with their companies. These leaders know that employees must devote wholeheartedly to their job which is only possible when the leaders guide them with full dedication. The leaders must however have a grip on what’s happening inside the organization. This need has arisen because the competition is so much.

But an LMS can make sure that the employees are well informed.

Therefore, the presentations can be converted into PDF, and Word documents can be introduced in the form of videos and put in an LMS. So, leaders know which employees are working hard to educate themselves.

These are the following benefits of using an LMS:

Can be accessed everywhere: The best part about the use of LMS in an organization is that there can be content accessed at odd hours. Employees might be busy throughout the day but they can access the LMS at the end of the day when they are free. This makes sure that there are no disturbances in the workflow of a company.

You can’t always schedule a seminar for employees to learn. Employees can learn whether they are traveling or have a flight scheduled somewhere.

Tough to gather employees in one place: There can be huge issues when you try to organize a meeting in a large organization. Employees have to gather at one place from different locations. It’s difficult to monitor who has attended or not. However, this is not so with LMS where employees access training from their homes. That’s why it’s easy to monitor how many employees have attended the training. You can also register employees for this training.

Cloud-based LMS: When you have opted for a cloud-based LMS, you don’t have to install the LMS on the local server in your company. Since it’s installed on the cloud, it can be accessed from anywhere.

The companies can also use different features of an LMS and benefit from it. These features include being able to hold training in different branches at the same time.

Vendor support: The LMS has external vendor support which makes sure that the clients get support about the important kind of configuration information like how to install the LMS.

Support for employee onboarding: Employee onboarding is an important reason why you should invest in an LMS. It’s because employees need to be educated about a large number of compliance rules. Employees have to pass exams about these rules only then they can be certified to work in the company. You can assign the same content repeatedly on the LMS for the employee onboarding process.

These are the various benefits of an LMS for a company.
