How to use the LMS in the best possible way in schools?

There is a huge change in the way education is imparted now. Schools have started adopting the LMS systems to teach students. But it is a challenge for teachers to be able to adopt eLearning USA. It is the duty of the school, in that case, to help teachers be able to seriously use an LMS.

Students have been using LMS for various purposes which include checking their grades, finding the syllabus of the course, and submitting assignments. They also get important notifications about a course through an LMS. When the students use the LMS, they can use it to access important papers, rather than asking other students for their hard copies.

The reasons why teachers find it so tough to use an LMS are as follows:

No training for teachers:

Although schools get help from LMS companies in USA to install an LMS, they fail to understand that teachers might not be apt at using the tool. This leads to teachers not being able to upload the content on the LMS and students unable to find anything useful on it. Thus it is the job of the LMS companies in USA to provide timely help when needed.

The biggest advantage of using an LMS is that it can add to the content of the school because videos and movie clips can be added to textual content. But the teachers must know how to do it to avail this advantage.

Another advantage of an LMS is that it has group discussion forums where students can discuss their problems. They can also offer their opinion on the work done by other students. They can also talk on chat messengers to share a reading list of books. They can also post relevant links which can help other students.

Waste of resources:

Over time, teachers have been using resources to teach students. But they can’t use them with the LMS when they can’t upload them. This leads to the wastage of time devoted by teachers to developing such resources.

The LMS can’t be integrated with PowerPoint. Now teachers might have developed PowerPoint slides for teaching students. But they can’t upload them to an LMS. The elearning USA should therefore ensure that the PowerPoint slides can be integrated with the LMS.

Lack of course management:

Course management is an important component of an LMS. The students don’t know how to browse through the LMS so that they can find a course. Also, teachers, can’t find the assessment analytics of students.

How to get rid of these problems?

  1. School management should be able to help teachers: Make sure that the school management is behind the initiative of using an LMS. It should know all the information which is required by teachers and can help students also. It should be able to explain the advantages of using an LMS.
  2. Understand Your School Culture: It’s important that before implementing any LMS through the LMS companies in USA, you can get a grasp of the school culture. The students might not become accustomed to the idea of using an LMS where every document is in the form of a soft copy, so it’s better that teachers also have hard copies of documents with them. The teachers can distribute such copies if a student asks for them. But this does not mean that soft copies should not be uploaded on an LMS.
  3. The use of already existing software with the LMS: For example, the school could be using attendance software for the students.

Make sure that the LMS companies in USA know how to integrate such software with your LMS.

This can make sure that you can get the full advantages of such software. When the LMS, is implemented, the attendance data can not be recorded any further because students are studying from their homes. Moreover, the already existing attendance data should also be uploaded into the new LMS.

  4. Implement a training strategy: This is quite important so that the staff has complete knowledge of how to upload resources on an LMS. To train teachers fully on how to use the LMS, the help of the IT staff of the school is needed. These employees must be ready to help teachers as and when required.

So, apart from taking help from LMS companies in USA, the schools can also rely on their IT staff to get the best from an LMS.

How elearning should be made better for students?

Elearning has become one of the major ways to teach students ever since the pandemic happened. But it has put an additional responsibility on schools to see that the students are learning something. The schools have made learning more interactive and fun for students.

These are the following ways in which they are doing so:

Proper space for learning

When they are at home, the students should not feel as if they are away from school. So, there needs to be proper space at home for the learning of kids. This implies that this room should not get any disturbance from parents. There should be proper lighting in this room. Although parents should enter this room only when required, this room should be under their supervision. The parents should make sure that they don’t enter the room while the student is studying on his own or the class is going on because it can make the environment unhealthy for him and the teacher.

How should lessons be imparted through learning USA?

The students should be able to access the teaching material. It should be shared with them in the form of .pdf documents. During the class, the teachers can also call parents to inform them about their wards’ progress. When parents learn how well their child is doing, they encourage the child and also feel proud. Apart from that, the schools should impart instructions in byte-sized modules and after that, the length of the lessons should increase.

Content should be engaging:

The learning can only be imparted once the content is stimulating for students. So, videos should be there in Elearning lectures. Apart from videos there can also be interesting characters built-in for the students and have animation. There can also narration for students or subtitles appearing on the screen.

Elearning USA activities should be mobile friendly:

The students are so addicted to using mobile phones in their lives. So, the elearning USA courses must be accessible on mobile phones. When the courses can be accessed on mobile phones, the courses of the schools are accessible to a vast number of learners. This makes sure that the courses are available to so many learners who don’t have desktop PCs with them.

Gamification in elearning USA:

The students have to be encouraged to learn most playfully. For this, it’s important, that there is gamification in elearning USA. The students can increase their confidence when they win in a game. The games should be designed as creatively as possible. When students use their imagination in elearning USA courses, their cognitive faculties become stronger.

Safety of children in remote education:

There is also a need to make sure that online education is safe for children. For this purpose, some malicious sites can be blocked. The students can also be made aware of what information they can divulge on a site.

The students also should not register for any site with a personal email id. This email id can be hacked and a lot of information about the student and his family can be compromised.

The students when studying from home are a part of a virtual learning environment in the form of a school portal. These portals have discussion boards and the students should be refrained from posting anything malicious here without consulting an elder.

When parents are creating online profiles of their children on the school websites, they should refrain from divulging information such as date of birth, phone number and residential addresses.

It’s important that the anti-virus software is installed on your system to prevent unauthorized downloads on systems. Also, the number of websites offering malicious content has been increasing. Make sure that you renew the antivirus software as often as you can. This is how students can be taught through elearning.

How did Indian students cope up during the pandemic?

The semesters of the schools have started. What impact will it have on schools? This has been a question that has been asked repeatedly ever since the schools were closed to reduce the spread of the pandemic.

Since then, the students have been studying from home through elearning.

The schools for classes 9-12th opened in October15th-November 2020 in various states in India. The students have returned to schools, and colleges after the government opened up for class 10th and 12th respectively. This decision has been taken favorably by students.

On March 1, the schools were reopened for students of some of the other classes apart from senior classes. For example, the schools in Bihar reopened for students in classes 1st-5th but strict Covid-19 guidelines have been issued. Schools in Uttar Pradesh also opened for classes 1-5th, but thermal scanning and wearing masks were mandatory for students.

The period where students had to study from home was quite challenging for them. They had to use mobile phones in case they didn’t have access to laptops and desktop PCs. Although this period was used most productively by students, they faced some problems also.

Lack of socialization:

Although students were learning digitally in India during the lockdown, this had its own set of problems. Students were not able to have any social interactions with their pals. The teachers also had to sit in front of the PCs managing large classes and had to upgrade their technical skills.

When the classes were being conducted online, there was a frenzy among elearning companies. It’s because all the course material was uploaded on an LMS also. The students were engaged with presentations of content. Such companies even designed immersive elearning classes for students.

Elearning is going to be there for a long time even when the pandemic is over. Elearning is no longer only restricted to corporates who used it to train their employees.

Lack of resources like access to PCs:

Although elearning was done to help students, many students were deprived of its benefits due to a lack of access to resources. Hence states volunteered to have elearning imparted to them through TV.

The program for launching TV classes was announced for students in May 2020.

The content for the classes is aired on 34 DTH channels. Each of these channels will be devoted to a single class. Hence this program will be known as the “one class-one channel” program. Every day, 4 hours of content is telecasted on these channels repeated 5 times a day.

This is how Indian students coped during the pandemic when the schools were closed.

Challenges before the Indian government and the service providers due to elearning

Elearning has changed a lot of things in the world of education.

This is happening partly because of the pandemic because the learners can’t go to school. However, due to the efforts of the Government of India, the internet is available in all the remote corners of India now.

The government is also making it a priority to give education a digital form. Many elearning portals have come up where the learners are registering themselves for different courses.

There are other challenges before the Indian government when it comes to elearning.:

Lack of internet

One of them is that there is a higher lack of internet facilities for students in schools as compared to those in colleges. So the government is all set to fill this paucity. This paucity has to be met whether be the financial background of students, their location i.e. whether they live in villages.

Inability to browse through online courses

It’s also important that students are prepared for mock tests which are sample tests based on online tests, an integral part of elearning. Students must attempt these mock tests so they have enough practice about how to change the language of questions in the online tests, how to proceed to answer the next question, how to start the test by consenting to the terms and conditions etc.

Apart from ease of attempting, there is another reason why the online assessment method of elearning is preferred. It’s because students don’t get whatever they deserve in terms of their careers. After all, the traditional learning methods just focus on memorization.

Therefore, elearning is a feasible way to make students understand the practical application of subjects. Many universities are already taking online exams(MCQ-based) for students.

Lesser degrees were provided in digital mode

The government has also eased the restrictions on colleges offering degrees through online mode. These colleges were not allowed to offer more than 20% of their courses through the digital mode. But now these colleges are allowed to offer a large number of degrees online.

The students are also forced to opt for Indian education. It’s because of the pandemic they can’t leave the country to pursue foreign degrees. However, there has to be immersive content in elearning to make sure students are engaged by it.

Here are the following methods to do so:

  • Technology should be used efficiently:

The Education Tech companies have opportunities to make sure that the learning content is suited to the needs of the learners. This can include their academic needs also i.e. what their course requires them to learn.

But technology can be used in elearning courses to stimulate excitement in learners. This can be in the form of images, videos, and games included in elearning modules.

  • Blended learning:

Blended learning has become the new norm for Indian elearning companies now. This kind of learning combines both synchronous and asynchronous learning which implies that students interact with teachers through video conferencing but have to study on their own also.

Elearning companies have to broaden their horizons and offer 3D-based learning to students. The students must get artificial intelligence experiences in their elearning modules like chatbots answering simple questions for them.

This is how elearning has been experiencing changes ever since the pandemic hit India.

data protection

How can schools ensure the protection of data?

There has been a revolution in online learning which has led to serious repercussions for any learning institution.

Although companies and schools have implemented elearning protocols and technologies, data protection is still a sensitive issue.

Data protection has been made mandatory by the General Data Protection Regulation(GDPR). It’s a regulation in the law of the European Union on data protection. It makes sure that the data transfer is safe within the European Union. It was implemented on 25th May 2018.

In online learning, data storage is huge because it involves recording the chats between teachers and students besides student details. So, all the interactions between teachers and students and between students are stored for a brief time because it leaves a digital imprint. This makes sure that all the data even though it gets stored briefly is not misused.

The schools have to be careful regarding the protection of sensitive data because if it is not protected it can lead to repercussions for them. So, they have to deal with matters such as who can access the LMS and come across sensitive data about children.

Cyberattacks are common incidents in the education domain. A survey conducted by VMWare in 2017 reveals that almost 33.3% of universities in the UK have faced a cyberattack per hour. In the US also, the frequency of cyberattacks is high with one thousand incidents that have happened in the last 4 years. The frequency of these cyberattacks has been high, especially during the Coronavirus pandemic. There was an increase of 388% in cyberattacks between the second and third quarters of 2020 as per the report released by Emsisoft. The following steps can be taken by schools for data protection:

  • Data classification:

It’s better to classify data as per the kinds of protection needed by it. It’s better to do so, to be able to have different levels of data security for various kinds of data. You can measure the risk for various kinds of data and then create strategies for data protection. Once you have an idea about the sensitivity of data you can have various protection policies in place. Implementing such kinds of policies makes sure that you are saved from any kind of consequences arising due to insufficient protection of data.

  • Archiving of emails:

The various policies regarding data protection are about how long the important data needs to be stored.

As per FERPA(Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act), emails have to be stored in an educational institution for over 5 years. This is a US law that ensures that the student records are maintained by those schools that get grants as per any authorized program of the US Department of Education. The parents of students have a right to check their ward’s records. Even students above the age of 18 can check such records. The schools can’t disclose any information about the student without the written consent of parents except under special circumstances.

Since emails have to be stored by schools, they can automate the archiving of emails and their deletion process.

  • Use of proper communication software:

It’s also important to ensure that the schools use a proper LMS to communicate with students. They can’t use the video conferencing software to communicate with students because there the data is not safe. This data can be used by nefarious parties because it contains chats between teachers, parents, and students and class recordings.

So, it’s apt to use an LMS which can maintain the privacy standards of students. They are specialized software available for this purpose that ensures data protection. They have proper databases for storing chats, video recordings, and emails. You have to buy access to this database.

So, this is how schools can ensure data protection.
